Best Places in Ponte Vedra Beach To Take Your Kids - Bird Island Park

The kids are out of school and you don't have to go far to find some fun. Ponte Vedra Beach is packed with things to do with your kids when you need to get out of the house. Our favorite "best kept secret" is Bird Island Park which many locals have driven by thousands of times without knowing to stop and visit!

Highlights of Bird Island Park Include:

  1. Innovative Design: Bird Island Park is an innovative, passive park designed by Bobby Weed. It offers various amenities and opportunities for different activities, making it enjoyable for all generations.

  2. Ecological Focus: The park showcases the ecosystems of northeast Florida, emphasizing native flora and fauna. It features dune and wetland areas, educational signage, and interactive art sculptures, providing an immersive experience and promoting environmental awareness.

  3. Amenities and Features: The park offers a range of amenities, including an entrance gazebo, a winding trail, water features, and examples of native hammock. Visitors can explore a sea turtle labyrinth maze with beautifully crafted benches, a story telling ampitheater area with benches and a small stage, a boardwalk surrounding the pond with Bird Island at its center, a waterfront gazebo, a children's play area, and a handicapped accessible sidewalk.

  4. Community Effort: Bird Island Park came into existence through the collaborative efforts of Ponte Vedra residents and the County. A non-profit 501c3 organization was formed, and with the support of businesses and individuals, they raised over $400,000 over seven years to fund the park's construction.

  5. History and Opening: Construction of Bird Island Park began in early 2009, and it was officially dedicated and opened on October 15, 2010. The park stands as a testament to the community's dedication and commitment to creating a local recreational space.

  6. Parks and Recreation Newsletter: Stay informed about the happenings in the parks by subscribing to the Parks and Recreation Newsletter, which provides updates on events, activities, and news related to the park system.

Bird Island Park in Ponte Vedra Beach is great for the little kids (and parents!) because there's easy parking, a shaded playground, and tons of wildlife easily viewed from a shady boardwalk. The kids can see turtles (TONS!) and fish, and if you walk around the lake, you can catch a view of some St. Johns County fire trucks -- major bonus!

The park sits just behind the Ponte Vedra Beach library, which is a great stop for bathrooms, air conditioning and a good book after the park. Of all the activities in Ponte Vedra Beach, Bird Island Park is by far one of the best kept secrets around and one of the things that make our coastal community a great place to live!
